Jayland Walker remembers family and Akron service pastors

After Jayland Walker graduated from Buchtel High School, his family asked him about his plans for the future.

Walker, who had struggled all his life, said he was considering going semi-pro, much to the delight of his younger cousins.

What would his wrestling name be? His family made suggestions.

“No,” he told them. “I’m going to be String Bean.”

“With Jayland, you weren’t always sure if he was joking or not, so we kind of laughed about it,” Walker’s cousin Robin Elerick said with a laugh as she shared the memory at Walker’s funeral on Tuesday at Akron. Civic Theater in downtown. Akron.

Elerick was among several family and clergy who spoke at the funeral of Walker, who was shot dead by Akron police on June 27 after a brief chase. They provided the first glimpse into the family of the 25-year-old whose name has become a national rallying cry for police reform.
