Wales vs Iran live updates

POST! POST!

Can you believe it?

Iran hit the post twice in a minute. First, Azmoun disengages and shakes the woodwork. Then, as Wales clear, Gholizadeh rolls into the OTHER post from long range. An amazing sequence that ends – sort of – with Hennessey clutching the ball and Wales surviving.

Sprinkler Clock

Word from our reporters is that this pitch was heavily, heavily watered at halftime. That could suit Iran because they certainly moved the ball better and more effectively.

Praise for Quieroz

Given what happened against England and the turbulent atmosphere around his players – and in some of his press conferences – Carlos Quieroz put in a very decent performance today.

Now back in progress – still 0-0.

A fast pod for halftime?

There’s more than enough time to catch up on the Athletic Football Podcast. Adam Leventhal and our UK and US writers look to the big games and wonder what will become of Neymar and his lumpy ankle…

HT: Wales 0 – 0 Iran

That’s nervous. Wales had the ball, Iran had the chances.

CHANCE

Azmoun vs. Rodon continues to rumble. This time the striker steals just a meter forward in the six-yard box and is inches away from touching a brilliant cross from the right half-space.

Rodon was also booked for a wild lunge on Taremi.

Wales attack starting to gel?

Just before half-time a good example of what we were hoping for from Kieffer Moore: he gets a pass on the edge of the box and shoves Harry Wilson into space. However, a good recovery from the Iranian defense eliminated the opportunity and Wilson’s shot deflected to a corner.

However, Hosseini is doing well in traffic and we’re no closer to a goal.

Joe Devine says:

I live with Tifos Joe Devine during the tournament and he occasionally tosses a pearl of wisdom around the living room. Here is his latest:

“Iran had significantly less possession and were still much more dangerous. A reminder that possession is a guarantee of nothing.”

Azmoun vs. Rodon

Sardar Azmoun has made a huge difference and although they seem stuck off the pitch, he and Mehdi Taremi look dangerous together.

Azmoun specifically appears to be stretching the Welsh defence. He was just testing Joe Rodon’s pace and would have gone on target earlier in the half had it not been for one of the last man tackles of the tournament coming from the Spurs center half on loan.

Reaction to the Iranian players singing the anthem

Sina Saemian is from the Gol Bezan Podcast and was one of the Iranian journalists who spoke with James Montague for the article we published on The Athletic. This is his reaction to the anthem:

More from Laura Williamson and Alex Abnos

Laura reported from the stadium:

“You’d be amazed if both teams can keep that pace for 110 minutes or how long World Cup games are these days. It’s hectic. Much of the pitch is shaded, but most of half of Wales is exposed to the sun. No cap for Hennessey, but there are bucket hats aplenty at the end of Wales.”

And Alex got in touch again:

“Iran are already looking about a million times better than they did against England. They combine well at the break and win enough one-on-ones with Welsh defenders to create clear chances, like in the goal that was ruled offside.”

Destination IRAN (Excluded)

Well well well…

A big warning for Wales who are cut open by a brilliant action at the front of the pack. However, the timing of the last pass wasn’t quite right and VAR crosses it off.

CHANCE

Big, big save by goalkeeper Hosseini, who blocks a Kieffer Moore header. Definitely Wales’ best moment yet, opening Iran with a superb Connor Roberts cross.

Good game that. A bit hectic but just starting to cook.

Iran plays

This is not the same Iran team that faced England. That Williams shot aside, they started pretty well. Milad Mohammadi just hung a cross on the back post that posed questions for the Welsh defence. And while Wayne Hennessey didn’t mind, Sardar Azmoun also scored a shot on goal.

Just a reminder that Iran is far better than what we saw a few days ago.

Early Welsh Attack

After two minutes, the game has to calm down. Neco Williams has just sprayed a shot over the Iranian goal but it’s only enough to clatter into the stands behind the goal.

Meanwhile, Laura Williamson sent a picture from the press box.

The Iranian anthem

It’s very difficult to watch.

As the Iranian national anthem played, the camera panned to an elderly man in the crowd, who then burst into tears upon seeing himself on the big screen. It also chose a woman to do the same, and inside the stadium, Laura Williamson, editor-in-chief of The Athletic, reports loud jeers throughout.

More stoners

I like Kieffer Moore’s selection. As England and Harry Kane have shown, Iran appear to be struggling with a taller forward and the presence of that pivot allowed the supporting players to be much more prominent. We hope this theory holds true for Wales and Gareth Bale.
