It’d take a particular kind of silliness to term as dark horses a country that has won the World Cup twice, made the last eight, the last 16 and the last four in the previous three tournaments, and been champions of South America 15 times. But Uruguay start this competition as outsiders, despite a pedigree rooted both in history and the contemporary.

Partly, that reflects the difficult of the group they’re in, but even so, the 40-1 at which they were available last evening is unreflective of a squad packed with class and wildness. Boasting José María Giménez at the back, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield, with Darwin Núñez and Luis Suárez up front, Uruguay are absolutely not to be trifled with.

Nor, though are South Korea. Son Heung-min is fit – though perhaps not match fit – while Jeong Woo-Yeong’s Freiburg have made a fine start to the Bundesliga season. That gives them a decent goal-threat while, in midfield and defence, they’ve the solidity and security of players who’ve been together a long time.

key events

1 minute Suarez turns around his first tackle, then Napoli’s Minjae sends a decent ball to Sangho on the right, forcing Gimenez into a corner.

1 minute The crowd demonstrates their ability to count down from 10 before telling us their favorite color and shape…then let’s get started.

“Look at the referee’s namesurely we need to end this game with a referee controversy in order for the ‘Highway Robbery’ headlines to air,” volunteers Shaun Wilkinson.

It’s one of the big contradictory names. Anyone else think of it?

South Korea’s is also great Slow build up with a chorus to really catch up.

Oh yes, the Uruguay anthem is a bang and the players, led by Godin, demonstrate it in the best possible way. You are in the mood.

Speaking to the BBC studio, Ashley Williams says Suárez is the best striker he has faced. I can believe that – I haven’t seen many runs in better form than his when he was once good and the ones that come to mind as close equivalents are Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo and Thierry Henry.

Here come our teams!

E-mail! “Come on, those triumphs were 92 and 72 years ago, respectively!” says Ben Bernards of Uruguay. “By that logic, Preston is still a British heavyweight and my team GAIS here in Sweden remains a big man on campus, despite his four Swedish titles in 1919, 1922, 1930 and 1954 (in the real world they just ended the third league promoted back to the second). Uruguay will excel mightily if they make it to the quarterfinals.”

Don’t agree because Uruguay are still good and their heritage is part of that because it’s part of the football culture that helps them become good.

What is the best nickname for the national team? Uruguay’s Le Celeste is certainly among the top few – although perhaps that’s due to my Anglophony and ascribes a heavenly quality to it. Ghana’s Black Stars is also up there, as is Italy’s Azzurri and Zambia’s Chipolopolo.

FYI

We Will Rock You plays over the stadium PA, an eclectic, left-wing choice if there ever was one. How do you feel about these things?

We share joy here, so here are some of mine: I recently discovered salting of meat. Water, spices (more exciting than salt), onion powder, honey (a sugar substitute), heat, cool, meat in, refrigerator. Then dip in the sauce you previously used as a marinade, cook and baste, whether on the grill, under the grill, in a pot or in the oven.

I suspect South Korea will hope to surpass Uruguay in midfield – although I expect Valverde to intervene. I’m sure they also want Son, Uijo and Sangho running after Godin and Gimenez.

Embolo was born in Yaounde; What moment was his goal.

Obviously, looking at the South Koreans XI, the presence of Son in it is the big story. As it was a facial injury he should be able to get going easier than if it was a muscle injury. I’m also looking forward to seeing how Inbeom is doing – he plays for Olympiakos and at 26 years old he should be entering this competition at just the right time.

Cameroon will regret the missed chances in the first half. They are in big trouble with Serbia and then Brazil.

Here’s one we did earlier:

Who expected Federico Valverde to become so good so quickly? Not me, I have to admit, but he comes to this World Cup in frankly appalling form, which I think is an interesting wrinkle of a mid-season tournament. I also wish Darwin Nunez would do something here – although his touch and degree can skew towards the avant-garde, he has an invaluable ability to both make things happen and be on stage when they happen, so tournament football should be too suit him . Otherwise, Facundo Pellistri, who has been struggling to get a game at either Man United or Alavés, is starting, which makes sense: when you’re playing with two forwards you need at least one winger and he can go either way.

Tangential to continue on an Atléti tip, Álvaro Morata, who scored the seventh goal in the 7-0 win, is one of my moments at the World Cup so far. I stick to my theory that Diego Simeone only bought him to make sure he would maintain a reasonable level of incandescence throughout each training session.

Taking a closer look at the teams, Ronaldo Araújo is not available for Uruguay. I doubt he would have played – Godin and Gimenez are too well hidden and know each other too well – but I’d bet he’s at least better than the former, just as he enjoys his old-school style of face-first defense.

Update after yesterday’s yellow car controversy: Green Car Hair Skriffle was warmly welcomed by the youngest Harris. I have yet to try it on the medium Harris, but you’ll be able to tell by my perpetual absence from blogs like this.

Only 15 minutes TV setup before this one; phew How do you fit 42 reports “from the English camp” and 27 “from the Welsh camp” in such a short space of time? At this point, including today, we only have five days of Tetris with quad play left. Make the best of them folks.

preamble

It would take a special kind of silliness to call a country that has won the World Cup twice, made the last eight, last 16 and last four in the last three tournaments and been South American champions 15 times dark horses . But Uruguay enter this competition as underdogs, despite a pedigree rooted in both history and the present.

Partly this reflects the difficulty of the group they are in, but still the 40-1 they were available with last night reflects nothing of a squad full of class and ferocity. With José María Giménez in defence, Federico Valverde and Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield and Darwin Núñez and Luis Suárez up front, Uruguay are not to be trifled with.

Neither does South Korea. Son Heung-min is fit – if not fit – while Jeong Woo-Yeong’s Freiburg have made a good start to the Bundesliga season. This gives them a decent scoring threat while having the solidity and security of veteran players in midfield and defense.

What to say is that the group of death is loose!
