Will Ivana help Donald Trump with tax breaks from beyond the grave?

OWhen Ivana Trump, Donald Trump’s first wife, was buried last month near the first hole at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, few immediately guessed that the location of her grave could also serve the purposes. long-time tax planner from her ex-husband.

New Jersey’s tax code exempts cemetery land from all taxes, rates and assessments — and his grave, as such, potentially has beneficial tax implications for a Trump family trust that owns the golf business, in a state where property and estate taxes are notoriously high.

According to documents released by ProPublica, the Trump Family Trust previously sought to designate a nearby property in Hackettstown, New Jersey, as a nonprofit cemetery corporation.

But Ivana Trump, who died earlier this month at 73 after falling at her home in Manhattan in New York, is the first known person to be buried on the golf course, where Donald Trump and his family spend much time. in the summers.

Under the New Jersey tax code, cemetery corporations are not only exempt from property taxes, rates and assessments, or personal property taxes, but also from business taxes, sales taxes, income taxes, and taxes. inheritance tax, according to Insider.

Brooke Harrington, a sociology professor at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, tweeted on Saturday that she had looked into claims that Ivana Trump’s resting place could also benefit her ex-husband’s overseas tax planning. falls.

“As a tax researcher, I was skeptical of rumors that Trump buried his ex-wife in this sad little patch of dirt at his golf course in Bedminster, NJ, just for tax breaks. So I checked the NJ tax code and folks…it’s a tax evasion trifecta. Property, income and sales taxes, all eliminated,” Harington wrote:after opinions accusing Trump of being primarily motivated by the possibility of tax relief began arise on social networks.

Harrington then tweeted the full New Jersey tax code for cemetery grounds. Although there is no stipulation as to the amount of human remains needed to qualify for the break, sales of wreaths, large evergreen arrangements, flowers and other similar items are taxable.

While saying she was surprised by the tax proposals, she also accused Donald Trump to bury his wife in “little more than a pauper’s grave” and thereby dishonor the three children they had together, Ivanka, Don Jr and Eric.

Yes. I was surprised. That’s why I checked and why I posted the thread.

I couldn’t believe her 3 kids – whom she apparently loved and who loved her – would allow their dad to treat their mom like this. Burying Ivana in little more than a pauper’s grave dishonors them all.

Earlier reports suggested that her ex-husband planned to build different types of graveyard operations on the Bedminster golf course.

Last week it was the venue for the Saudi-backed LIV golf tournament and was the focus of protests by some families of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the United States, after Donald Trump previously joined views that the kingdom was behind al-Qaeda’s plot to hijack passenger planes and crash them into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon.

US public radio station NPR reported in 2012 under the online headline “Fairway to Heaven” that Trump planned to build himself a mausoleum on the property, sparking local objections. This proposal was later extended to a cemetery that could hold over 1,000 possible graves.

That plan was later scrapped and replaced with the design for a “10-plot private family cemetery” at the same location, and further refined into a proposed 284-plot commercial cemetery, the station reported.

Ivana Trump was buried in a lot near the first tee of the golf course, following her funeral in Manhattan on July 20. Her resting place is currently marked with a rudimentary wreath of white flowers and an engraved granite stone.

However, the 1.5 acre plot is unlikely to provide tax exemptions for the entire Bedminster property – any break only applies as long as the plot is under 10 acres.

But every break counts, and the former president previously designated the plot a farm because some trees on the site are turned into mulch used for flower beds, according to The Washington Post.

Trump’s ideas to partially designate the golf course as a cemetery date back to at least 2014. Plans later filed with local and state authorities listed a proposal for a pair of cemeteries — one for the family, another with 284 plots to sale. The Washington Post noted that buyers, presumably avid golfers, “could pay some kind of everlasting membership” to the club.

But Trump, true to himself, had not decided on a course of action at the time. Robert Holtaway, a Bedminster town official, said he had doubts about the plans for the cemetery. “It never made sense to me.” But, he added, “we don’t question the motives. We are there as a land use council”.

Trump already has land at All Faiths Cemetery in Jamaica, Queens, near his mother and father, but the plans for his Bedminster Mausoleum were suitably grand: 19 feet high, stone, with obelisks, and planted in the middle of the course.

Trump has kept quiet about his plans for how the “Eternal Donald” will be commemorated in the earthly realm. In 2007, then 60, he told the New York Post that the Gold Course Mausoleum was a rational choice.

“It’s never something you like to think about, but it makes sense,” he told the newspaper’s Page Six column. “It’s such a beautiful land, and Bedminster is one of the wealthiest places in the country.”
