World Cup Goal Music: Each team’s song choices, with Gala’s #1 ‘Freed From Desire’

DOHA, Qatar – At first glance, Blur, BTS, Drake, Dua Lipa, Mase, Mariachi Vargas, Men at Work, Nickelback and Zombie Nation don’t seem to have much in common. They are unlikely to appear all together in many music fans’ Spotify playlists. But they are all artists on the official list of songs to be played when goals are scored at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Before the start of the tournament, each national team submitted up to two songs to FIFA to be played over the stadium’s PA whenever a goal was scored. Each entry has been reviewed by FIFA, but sources have told ESPN none have been banned from the list due to their lyrical content.

Music plays an increasingly important role at world championships, many songs stick in your head. As you walk through Qatar, you’ll hear echoes of previous tournaments: K’naan’s “Wavin’ Flag,” synonymous with the 2010 World Cup, is a favorite here, and you can’t escape Shakira’s “Waka, Waka (This Time For Africa)”. . ” from the same tournament in South Africa.

This year’s FIFA Fan Festival’s official anthem is Nicki Minaj’s ‘Tukoh Taka’, but it’s age-old classics like Gala’s ‘Freed From Desire’ that are the most popular here.

ESPN has obtained a list of all the songs selected by the 32 countries competing in Qatar, with the exception of Senegal’s, a bespoke song based on the team’s stars.

The United States has announced rapper Mase’s “Feel So Good” to be played for their goals, while Belgium lives up to its Red Devils nickname by opting for MC Devil’s “Deviltime”.

Elsewhere, there are some traditional, more predictable tips. Australia opts for Men at Works “Down Under” while their backup option is Powderfingers “On my Mind”. The exclusion of Australian rock legends AC/DC is controversial.

One of Canada’s options is Drake’s appearance on Meek Mill’s “Going Bad,” but it’s Germany that has chosen Canadian rockers Nickelback (“When We Stand Together”) as their celebration song.

Similarly, Brazil has chosen Escola De Samba’s “Esquentado O Couro,” but the Netherlands’ choice has a similar, more globally-recognized flavor: Bellini’s “Samba De Janeiro.”

Expect to hear “Idol” from K-pop icons BTS when South Korea scores. BTS’ Jung Kook teamed up with Qatari singer Fahad Al Kubaisi to sing “Dreamers” at the opening ceremony.

For teams like Croatia who are yet to score at the World Cup, anthems from Marko Lasic and Colonia stand ready as they break their duck, while Denmark’s choice is “Re Sepp Ten”, a song written by the Danish side in 1986 their World Cup campaign in Mexico this year has not yet been recorded either.

‘Freed from Desire’ is the anthem of choice, with England, Poland and Switzerland all picking the 1990s dance classic, given new life when Northern Ireland took their remastered version ‘Will Grigg’s On Fire’ to the European Championships 2016 brought championship.

There are other ’90s throwbacks, too, with France opting for Blur’s “Song 2” – a welcome choice for anyone who heard it while playing EA Sports’ “FIFA: Road to World Cup 98” – and Wales opting for it a pair of chest thumps in Zombie Nation’s trance-banger Kernkraft 400 alongside This is Wales by The Barry Horns, the band named after the 59-cap Welsh midfield legend.

But whatever is going on, as you watch a team celebrate a goal in Qatar, just hope it doesn’t get ruined by the commentator saying VAR is just checking…”
